My Top 10 Concerts of the Year:

1. Spank Rock/Santogold/Noisettes/Earl Greyhound/Yo Majesty

October 26 at the Filmore in New York City part of CMJ's Music Marathon

In what had to be the biggest rollercoaster showcase at CMJ, Friday night's triumphant performance from Spank Rock and Santogold almost was overshadowed the incredibly horrible openers, The Noisettes and Earl Greyhound.

Yo Majesty played maybe two songs to start it off, which was cool because they were supposed to play the Brooklyn Vegan showcase that I had been to earlier but cancelled. Earl Greyhound was next and they sucked for a variety of reasons, mostly because they were a bad rip-off of The Darkness, who are questionably good in the first place. I couldn’t believe that The Noisettes, the next band, could be any worse, but they proved me wrong, presenting one of the most choreographed, insincere performances of my life. Making life worse was the enthusiasm of the crowd, who didn’t share my opinion of the trio of trash. I was considering leaving, but luckily Santogold came out and the party started. They were a nice warm-up for Spank Rock, where the following things happened:

One of the Spank Rock DJs ran out onstage with a handle of Grey Goose, poured some in an audience member’s mouth, and went back to spinning.

M.I.A. chilled onstage for a while, with 30 or so other friends of Spank Rock.

Yo Majesty took her shirt off and showed off her boobies. I laughed for twenty minutes.

Amanda Blank showed up, she’s pretty cute.

Spank Rock put on the most energetic, amazing performance of the year, and possibly of my life.

I'm pretty sure all the people on stage had at least a handle or wine bottle in their vicinity and many blunts were ablaze at all times, lending a hand in Yo Majesty's boobies popping out. If these activities don't sound fun to you, then don't go to a Spank Rock show ever. For those of you with souls, any time Spank Rock is available for a concert in your area, make sure you attend.

2. Band of Horses/Wolf Parade/Modest Mouse

August 18 at the Download Festival at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, MA

Other people played (Guster, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Neko Case), but only those three really brought anything interesting to the table. Band of Horses previewed some tracks from their new record, Cease to Begin. Wolf Parade, one of my favorite bands of all-time, played a set composed mostly of their new material, which should be released in early '08. If the performance is any indication of what to expect on the record then it will be one of my favorites of 2008. Also, a jaw-dropping version of "I'll Believe in Anything," from "Apologies to the Queen Mary," made me almost cry with joy. Modest Mouse put up one of the better sets I've seen them play. Plus the crowd almost didn't suck, like most Isaac Brock and Co. shows.

3. Mission of Burma

September 21 at the Pearl Street Clubroom (downstairs) in Northampton, MA

Mission of Burma + downstairs at Pearl Street = orgasm.

4. Man Man

Opening for Modest Mouse on May 2 at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel, Providence, RI

I've never seen an opener steal a show from the main act as easily as Man Man did in Providence. It didn't help I almost got into a fight during Modest Mouse, but boy did they kind of suck. Their encore almost saved the day as they played the first two tracks from This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, Dramamine and Breakthrough. If they had only played Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset...

5. Islands/Saturday Looks Good to Me/ A bunch of other pretty great bands

The Brooklyn Vegan Showcase at the R-Bar on October 26

The Brooklyn Vegan Showcase had 7 or 8 bands, the very best being at the end. Saturday Looks Good to Me, who I hadn't ever listened to (sad, I know), played some of their new material from Fill Up the Room, out of K Records. Islands came next and played a bunch of new material, which happened to sound a lot darker and sinister and wonderful, much like some of the Unicorns material. Oh yeah, and Subtitle showed up for "Where There's a Will There's a Whalebone."

6. Of Montreal/Grand Buffet

Weekly Update 3

Hey everyone,

After two weeks of doing weekly emails I caved in and decided to start up a blog for new music. The past two weeks are up, plus a few goofy videos I had up there way back in June. The URL is: http://fallenthroughthecracks.blogspot.com/ Feel free to send it to friends who are into music.

It’s been acting sketchy when I tried posting some youtube videos, so bear with me as I work through the kinks.

Also, at the bottom are the charts from not only the rock department, but from Jazz, Hip Hop, World, RPM, and Loud Rock.

Just in time for the bitter cold weather, I’ve declared that it’s sad bastard week here at WMUA, as I received and added the reissues of the two Joy Division recordings, located in the new music section. If you like that band Interpol, then I would recommend checking out some Joy Division. And if you aren’t sad enough after listening to Joy Division, save some time for Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. I put his first three albums, plus an EP, in the New to WMUA section, located next to the classic/essential records section, below the new music section.

I bought the records when I saw Casiotone for the Painfully Alone perform out in Ludenberg, MA, Sunday night. I’ll be putting up some of those pictures on the blog this weekend. Look out for the ID he did for the station in spotbox in the upcoming week!

In other news, Band of Horses, on Wed. night, was a rousing success. I was told that several people came to the show because they heard our promotions on WMUA. Thanks to everyone who played the PSA, talked about it on their shows, and gave away tickets. I also have pictures from that show I’ll post up this weekend, too.

Thanks for all the nice feedback, keep it coming, and have a great long weekend,

Corey

New Records to Check Out:

Michael Showalter’s Sandwiches and Cats

http://www.myspace.com/michaelshowalter

Michael is part of the ridiculously funny comedy trio, Stella, with David Wain and Michael Ian Black. Although most of the record isn’t FCC friendly, it’s worth checking out for your own enjoyment. He will be performing at the Somerville Theater in Boston, MA, on November 29.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

http://www.myspace.com/sharonjonesandthedapkings

I don’t know who hasn’t checked this out yet, but if you haven’t then go to the funk section and burn this as soon as possible. If you get this Friday, she’s performing tonight at the Middle East in Cambridge. It’s sold out, but if you’re in Boston looking for something to do, you may be able to pick some tickets up on the street. Believe me, you won’t be disappointed. I’m genuinely depressed that I won’t be there, since the Budos Band will be supporting, and they are also brilliant:

http://www.myspace.com/budosband

The Mendoza Line

http://www.myspace.com/mendozalineband

It’s an old record, but anyone who likes Bob Dylan, who has been receiving a lot of press these days, should totally check this out. The record is in the new rock section still, in the September 5 section.

Deertick:

http://www.myspace.com/deertick

Artist out of Providence, RI, who is playing a bunch of dates in the next couple months. I’m going to try to get him to play out here next year, so stay tuned. One of my favorite up and coming bands.

Sigur Ros:

http://www.myspace.com/sigurros

Icelandic band puts out an odds and ends sort of record.

Drug Rug:

http://www.myspace.com/drugrugdude

A couple from Cambridge plays bedroom pop in the realm of The Moldy Peaches and Matt and Kim.

The Hives:

http://www.myspace.com/thehives

I love the Hives, and they have a new record, so play it please!

Phosphorescent:

http://www.myspace.com/phosphorescent

Solid folk music from the new record label, Dead Oceans.

The Cave Singers:

http://www.myspace.com/thecavesingers

Former members of Pretty Girls Make Graves come out with something new!

Gravenhurst:

http://www.myspace.com/gravenhurst

British band on Warp records.

Music News:

Andrew Bird will be playing Lupo’s in Providence, RI, November 29.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists will be playing Lupo’s November 30.

The new Saves the Day record is in my mailbox, if anyone wants to review it over the weekend.

I got a David Byrne reissue from 1984’s The Knee Plays where Byrne collaborated with Robert Wilson.

Here’s my weekly email. Thanks for the feedback last week, I put the rock charts at the end, as I will have every week from now on. Again, if anyone has any suggestions for me to add on to next week’s email, let me know. Thanks again, and keep on playing new music!

Records to Check Out:

I’m Not There Original Soundtrack:

Indie rock heavyweights cover Bob Dylan for the film “I’m Not There.” The film portrays Dylan in different segments of his life, as he changes his personalities. Different actors play Dylan throughout the movie.

Here’s the trailer: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=689521858674731391&q=i%27m+not+there&total=21931&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1

And here’s a clip from the movie, where Kate Blanchett plays Dylan, and David Cross (Arrested Development) plays Allen Ginsberg: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6279602058866628140&q=i%27m+not+there&total=21931&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

I would rather watch No Direction Home or Don’t Look Back, but that’s just me. It’ll be something worth checking out.

They played yesterday at Hampshire College and I missed it, which sucks, it was free. They’re a lot like My Bloody Valentine, which is certainly a good thing.

Ham 1 “The Captain’s Table”:

A mixture of indie rock history, think if David Berman (Silver Jews) or Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) fronted the Olivia Tremor Control, and Ham 1 is what you get. Members from Olivia Tremor Control are actually part of the band.

"The Landlord" Featuring Will Ferrell

Don't ever mess with your landlord.

The Landlord

Zach Galifianakis on "Ellen"

Apparently he didn't realize he was being watched in the dressing room by Ellen herself. Rumor had it that he got kicked out of the show because he wasn't dancing, but really Ellen just thought he was creepy. Ironic, eh?

Dan Deacon Video "Crystal Cat"

Dan Deacon has already given us the weirdest and most fun album of the year. Here's the weirdest and most fun video so far.

Check Dan Deacon out at the Middle East in Cambridge, Boston on Thursday, 7/12/07 with Videohippos.
